Revitalizing your home can be effortless with a few simple tweaks that can completely transform your space. One of our talented designers, Kristi Kingdon, recently helped transform a client's home by implementing a few easy-to-follow tips. Have a look at the before-and-after photos of this to gain valuable insights to help you elevate your own space.
"A dark space with bulky furniture was weighing them down and taking up too much space. A variety of wood finishes contributed to the weighted feeling but by selecting furniture that was more proportionate to the space, their living room was completely transformed.”
The visual weight and scale of furniture has a huge impact on the overall feel of a room. When selecting furniture, it's important to consider the size of the space, ceiling height and physical elements in the room such as trim, casings and built-in architectural features. A large, bulky sofa may be perfect for a spacious living room, but it can overwhelm a smaller space. Similarly, a delicate chair may get lost in a large room. You can create a balanced and harmonious environment by choosing furniture that is proportionate to the space. Kristi used the Davita chairs from Lexington which have a beautiful floating wooden wrap around frame and open rope detailing and the Nash sofa from American Leather to lift pieces off the floor allowing the room to feel open and airier.
Another way to transform a space is by changing the colours of the furniture. Upholstery can completely change the look and feel of a space. New furnishings in bright, bold colours can add excitement to a room, while muted tones can create a calming atmosphere. Dark colours recede while light colours advance. Anchoring the furnishings with an area rug in a complementary or contrasting colour will define the space. A lighter area rug to anchor and define a room is also a great tool to help refresh a space. By incorporating light-coloured upholstery throughout the space, Kristi was able to refresh the space.
Our showroom has a vast selection of in-stock options that are adaptable to various spaces and styles. Alternatively, if you have a piece of furniture that you love but doesn't quite fit with the rest of your décor, consider having it reupholstered.
Our designers often encounter clients who are hesitant to change the layout of their space. They believe that their current setup has served them well for years and are reluctant to make any major changes. Change is hard! However, we've found that even small adjustments can have a significant impact on the overall look and feel of a room. For example, simply flipping your sofa to the opposite side of the room and replacing it with your accent chairs can create a more balanced and harmonious environment. Angling your sofa can also add a sense of depth and dimension to a space while changing the placement of artwork can draw the eye to different focal points in the room. It’s not just about aesthetics, though; by repositioning furniture, you can create more space for movement and flow, making the room more comfortable and easier to navigate. Kristi was able to make huge improvements to the function of this client's home by doing this!
The design process can be overwhelming, but it's important to remember that it's a journey, not a destination. Take the time to explore different options and experiment with different styles and colors. Don't be afraid to mix and match different pieces to create a unique and personalized space. And most importantly, have fun with it! Designing your home should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, so don't stress too much about getting everything perfect. With a little creativity and imagination, you can transform any space into your dream home.
