Cottswood began when Sue Martin opened a small gift shop called Shambles offering décor, gifts and antiques. Over time the store grew to include larger pieces of furniture and eventually occupied multiple units in High Street on 102nd Avenue. Eventually the name of the store was updated to Cottswood, which is derived from Sue’s origins in the Cottswolds in England. By bringing together the finest furnishings from around the world and combining them with the best team of designers and installers in the market, Cottswood outgrew its humble beginnings and moved west to Mayfield Rd where it has been serving customers for almost 20 years.
When Sue was ready to retire and was looking for a succession plan, she met a local retailer and entrepreneur named Matt Singer. The fit was perfect and the next generation of Cottswood’s leadership had begun.
Matt says "My family has been in retail in Edmonton for four generations. My great-grandfather, Louis Podersky came from Chicago and opened a furniture business in Edmonton in 1912. You can still see the Podersky Furniture building on Whyte Ave. My family has been serving Albertans for well over 100 years. I grew up learning from great mentors, who taught me that retail is a fine balance of great relationships between customers, salespeople, suppliers and the community where we do business”.
